Thallus large, spreading, 8–10 (–30) cm wide, thin, fragile when dry. Lobes elongate to broadly rounded, 3–6 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, often overlapping; margins entire to shallowly notched, occasionally irregularly incised, downturned at apices. Upper surface pale greyish, olive-brown to reddish brown when dry, longitudinally wrinkled or bullate, ±maculate. Tomentum thin or thick, white or pale greyish, at apices and on upper surface. Lower surface white or pale buff, tomentose to arachnoid. Veins raised, 0.5–1.0 mm wide, pale buff at the margins to dark brown centrally, anastomosing, erect-tomentose; interstices broadly polygonal to irregular, arachnoid. Rhizines scattered, discrete, 2–4 (–7) mm long, simple and tomentose (bottle-brush-like) or occasionally fasciculate and appearing ±tufted, pale buff to dark brown. Apothecia not seen in Australian specimens; reported as rounded to saddle-shaped, to 7 mm wide, with ascospores (40–) 45–68 (–75) × 2.5–5.0 µm (Galloway, 2000). CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC. |

Known with certainty only from eastern N.S.W.; also circumpolar to temperate (North America, western Europe, Asia and New Zealand). | ||
